Embracing Parenthood with a Yogic Heart

"When we choose to be parents, we accept another human being as part of ourselves, and a large part of our emotional selves will stay with that person as long as we live." - Fred Rogers

As my son gets ready to embark on a new chapter across the country for school, I find myself grappling with a mix of emotions. Excitement and pride swell within me, seeing all the growth and accomplishments he's achieved. Yet, beneath it all, there's a subtle heaviness – a feeling of sadness and loss.

My boy, kind, loving, mindful, and helpful, has been an absolute pleasure to have around. It's hard to imagine him no longer living with us. But, this is the natural course. This is what it means to be a parent – to love, nurture, and let go.

In this journey of parenthood, I'm reminded of the wisdom that yoga has bestowed upon me. Just as in my yoga practice, I've learned the art of letting go – releasing attachments, embracing impermanence, and finding peace in the present moment.

As I watch my child's orbit take him further away, I draw on my yoga teachings to surrender to the flow of life. To understand that just like the moon affects the tides, my love and connection with him will continue, no matter the physical distance.

Through yoga, I've learned that each chapter in life is an opportunity for growth and transformation. As my son sets out on his path, I'll support him with an open heart and a mindful spirit. And as he finds his own place in the world, I'll continue to cherish the memories we've shared, knowing that our bond remains forever strong.

Letting go doesn't mean I love him any less; it means I'm embracing the true essence of parenthood – allowing our children to flourish and become the best versions of themselves.
